Vacancy: Full-time instructors in Science, Technology, and Society in the Faculty of Engineering at Bilkent University in Ankara

Posted by EuroScience on 10 Feb 2016

Full-time instructors are sought to teach Science, Technology, and Society (STS) in the Faculty of Engineering at Bilkent University in Ankara. The STS course is required for all engineering majors and is taken by about 800 students each year. The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) has a list of requirements for accreditation, which include ‘an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility’ and ‘the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context’. The course contributes directly to both of these goals through including material on the history of technology, applied ethics, democratization of technology, social shaping of technology, innovation studies and responsibility, technological controversies, emerging developments in intellectual property and additional special topics. The STS course also emphasizes how different values, including access, inclusion, sustainability, safety, social, and economic aspects, may be considered by engineers at different stages of development.

As the course is taken exclusively by engineering students, we have an exciting opportunity to transform the STS course to an applied format. The applied approach will help engineering students to anticipate and respond to values and risk issues associated with their technical projects. Engineering students at Bilkent University develop and contribute to projects in various fields of engineering such as robotics, nanotechnology, communication technologies, manufacturing systems, information systems and biomedical applications.

We are interested in candidates from various disciplines and backgrounds who are prepared to teach an introductory STS course. We highly value applicants with an engineering degree and/or an interest in applied outcome-based STS research.

Bilkent University is among the top 100 universities in 2013, worldwide, for engineering and technology, according to Times Higher Education rankings. The medium of instruction is English. Each application should include a resume and the names and addresses of three or more individuals who will provide letters of recommendation.

Please send all nominations and applications to:
