StiRRIng up young ICT minds - what RRI means for an ICT start-up?

Right beside the Bega channel, where white vaporetto-s are sailing, there is a brand new, futuristic office building, owned by the Timisoara Mayor Hall, fully administrated and operated by young entrepreneurs from Timisoara: INCUBOXX.

A room full of young and bright minds. Curious questioning eyes focused on the two presenters in front. The presentation starts. A word cannot pass without being reflected upon. Each slide is followed closely. Each aspect of RRI is discussed. Each statement – thoroughly examined and broken down to bits simple enough to know “what’s in it for me?” The RRI concept is indeed stirring up minds.

Business and industry play an important role in research and innovation. The products they develop can have a huge impact on our society and may lead to controversies. Responsible Research and Innovation can be a way to incorporate these societal needs, to analyse potential risks and anticipate bad consequences of new technologies.

Social Innovation Factory

Our society faces complex, and often border-transcending, problems, such as an aging society and climate change. Governmental bodies, be they local, regional or global, try to tackle these issues via funding of large scale research projects and legislation. But they are not the only ones working on change and solutions; social movements, civil society and cooperatives strive to solve social issues in a creative way. But the current global crisis and austerity in government funding do not aid such initiatives.

Summer University ’from idea to business with responsibility’

Széchenyi István University organized a summer university in the last week of August in the city of Győr (Hungary) where students and innovators were trained on how to progress from idea to implementation of innovation.

In the framework of this event, Mobilis Science Centre, as one of the Hub members of RRI Tools project, held a pilot workshop with the title 'Responsible Innovation' on 26 August.
